Founder Story

“Chiyu” means “healing” in Japanese. Our name honors one of our very first integrative therapies.

The story of Chiyu Integrative Health (Chiyu Center) is one that spans generations, scientific systems, and vastly different medical cultures.

Erika F. Marie, DACM, LAc, graduated the United States Military Academy at West Point in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Psychology, conducting research and studying systems engineering. While she was on active duty, her father was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer. To everyone’s surprise, he eliminated his cancer with a pioneering determination to use what we now call Integrative Medicine. His journey inspired Erika to investigate energy medicine, natural health, and herbal therapies. She was so impressed with the possibilities that she changed career paths from pursuit of an MD degree to earn a Masters and Doctorate in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine.

Shortly after completing national board-certification in acupuncture, Dr. Marie’s infant daughter, Adahlia, received a devastating diagnosis of Diamond Blackfan Anemia, an ultra-rare blood disorder. At this same time, Dr. Marie was hit with kidney failure of unknown origin. In this seemingly hopeless situation, Dr. Marie used an integrative approach to put her autoimmunity symptoms into remission and help Adahlia thrive despite monthly blood transfusions and severe cardiac iron overload. In 2019, Dr. Marie was selected to advise and start the acupuncture clinic of the Kansas City VA Hospital. She was published in EXPLORE medical journal in 2021.

In 2024, Dr. Marie worked with her daughter’s bone marrow transplant team in an integrative capacity. The result? Adahlia experienced an astonishingly gentle, quick, and complete BMT. Even with an unrelated stem cell donor and a hospital-acquired c. diff. infection at a critical time, Adahlia experienced neither mucositis, GVHD, post-transplant infection, nor peripheral neuropathy. She did not require an nG tube, was able to eat and drink normally throughout transplant, had quick engraftment, was discharged to her home and pets just 23 days after transplant, with her central line removed just 54 days later. Her quick healing thrilled her BMT team as she continued to surpass any expectation of vitality before every milestone, taking only a low-moderate dose of immune suppression. In less than 6 months, she was completely off all pharmaceutical medications. Just 9 months post-transplant, Adahlia began alpine skiing, doing blue and black diamond runs at high elevation in the Rocky Mountains, a sport she had never been able to enjoy previously due to the effects of anemia in DBA.

Today, Dr. Marie consults with people suffering from complex conditions in Colorado and remotely, wherever they need help. She also speaks, advises, and educates the public and health providers on the effective integration of medicines.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Marie and Adahlia act as advocates for multiple humanitarian organizations, encouraging blood donation and stem cell registration, with the National Marrow Donor Program, the American Red Cross, and the Department of Defense’s Salute to Life Program.

Carmen graduated from Southwest Acupuncture College in Boulder, Colorado with a Masters Degree in Acupuncture and is certified by the NCBAHM, the National Certification Board for Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine. She is a member of the Acupuncture Association of Colorado.

Her specializations include treatment of Chronic and Acute Pain and Injury, Sleep Disorders, and Mood Disorders. Carmen is also certified in injection therapy, which complements her training in Orthopedic and Sports Acupuncture.

Carmen had the pleasure of treating Division 1 athletes at the CU Sports acupuncture internship/externship.

She helps athletes achieve mastery through laser, muscle monitoring, sports medicine, injection therapy, and her knowledge of orthopedic anatomy, as well as trigger points.

She immigrated to the United States from Germany with her husband and two sons when she was 25 years old. She now has two grandsons whom she adores. She loves the Colorado mountains, hiking, and skiing. She also likes to sew and design and create jewelry.

How to Get Yourself Back in the Game

  • Woman looking at her phone and smiling

    Step 1. Evaluation & Assessment

It all starts here! The first step is to find out if we can help you. If so, we will explain how to get you the quickest recovery. It will include research-backed and innovative protocols and it will be designed and tailored to your unique health.

It’s why we are the best. We aren’t playing with your health, just like you aren’t playing, either. Using a systems-based, integrative approach, Dr. Erika F. Marie, DACM will hear your concerns, evaluate your health, and describe the best way forward for safe, quick, and full symptom resolution. Consultations with Dr. Marie are available in-person and anywhere via phone.

  • Marble spiral staircase with wooden handrail in a dimly lit room, with chairs and windows with curtains in the background.

    Step 2. Course of Treatment

Our specialty is the safe prescription of effective, customized Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) and neuro-hormonal modulation via acupuncture, infrared therapy, tissue-specific microcurrent stimulation, and other physio-energetic methods. The type of therapies we’ll recommend for you depends on the severity of your symptoms and your body’s response to treatment. If you’re out of state, many therapies can be self-administered.

Our therapies are painless and quick! Expect to be in-and-out of our office in 40 minutes or less. Treatments are repeated 2-4 times per week. Herbs are taken 2x/day until symptoms resolve.

    Step 3. Symptom Resolution

Research supports that individualized Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, and integrative therapies work. Even if you’ve “tried everything” and your problem has persisted for years, we can typically achieve complete resolution of pain, fatigue, & other distressing symptoms.

Once you are back to enjoying your life, we will explain how to keep your symptoms at bay. Following your plan is vital. We differ from conventional medicine in that our goal is treatment independence. Patients who follow our guidance‍ often ‍remain symptom free for years. You’ve got this.

Ready to move beyond what’s holding you back?

We’re here for you.
